In 1913 William Walden Ashby opened a pharmacy in a new brick building that remains the home of the store today. When William died of the flu in 1918, his brother Evan took over. In 1944 Evan’s niece lost her husband in a hunting accident and was left with 2 sons to support. Evan invited his niece’s family to live in the apartment above the store with no rent being charged.
His niece's eldest son was Wilbur Heflin, and he began by washing dishes at the store and watching his great-uncle in the store and how he opened his heart to Wilbur's family. Wilbur knew immediately that he wanted to be a pharmacist.
Wilbur has lived his dream. He owns and serves as chief pharmacist in the store today. Wilbur has seen many changes in the industry. He's an expert in the field and excellent at preventitive measures.
Wilbur enjoys having a friendly first-name basis relationship with each of his clients.
Remington Drug Company is the oldest of five independent pharmacies remaining in the Virginia Piedmont north of the Rapidan River.
